GEO for Beginners.

How to get cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.

Search changed. AI answers replaced blue links for millions of people. If your content isn't being cited by AI, it doesn't exist for a growing share of your audience. Here's what changed, why it matters, and three things you can do this week.

Why it matters

Search isn't dead.
It just moved.

People still search. They're just searching differently — and not clicking through to your site the way they used to.

58%

Drop in click-throughs from AI Overviews on top Google results

31%

Of US adults using generative AI search in 2026

4

Major AI search surfaces: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude

What this means for you

If someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best tool for [what you do]" and your name doesn't come up, you missed that lead. That's happening millions of times a day. GEO is how you fix that.

The three disciplines

SEO, AEO, GEO — what's the difference?

You need all three. Think of them as layers, not replacements.

SEO

Search Engine Optimization

Rank on Google's first page

How

Target keywords, build backlinks, optimize on-page content

What to know

Still matters — but its reach is shrinking. AI Overviews now appear above organic results.

AEO

Answer Engine Optimization

Get extracted as the direct answer in AI search

How

Structure content as clear Q&A, use schema markup, write concise definitions

What to know

Targets Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot. Getting into the answer box is the new #1 result.

GEO

Generative Engine Optimization

Get cited by LLMs like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity

How

Write authoritative, citable content. Get mentioned on trusted sources. Build topical authority.

What to know

The newest discipline. 31% of US adults now use AI search. If you're not cited here, you don't exist for them.

What to do

Three moves. Start this week.

Each one comes with a prompt you can use in Claude right now.

01

Write content that directly answers questions

AI systems cite content that answers questions clearly and concisely. If your content buries the answer in five paragraphs, it won't get extracted.

  • Lead with the answer, then support it with context
  • Use plain-language definitions for key terms in your space
  • Structure pages around specific questions your audience asks
  • Add a FAQ section to every important page — AI loves structured Q&A

Prompt for Claude →

I'm writing content about [your topic] for [your audience].

My target reader is asking: "[specific question they have]"

Write me:
1. A direct, 2-3 sentence answer that could be extracted as a standalone response
2. A 150-word supporting explanation with context and nuance
3. Three related questions they're likely to ask next

Format the answer so it's easy for both humans and AI to extract as a standalone response.
02

Build topical authority, not just keyword coverage

AI systems cite sources that are known authorities on a topic — not just pages that mention a keyword. You need depth across a subject, not surface-level coverage of many subjects.

  • Pick 2-3 topic clusters and go deep, not broad
  • Write the definitive beginner's guide for your core topic
  • Create a content cluster: one pillar page + 5-10 supporting pages
  • Update content regularly — AI systems favor fresh, accurate sources

Prompt for Claude →

I want to build topical authority on [your topic] for [your audience].

My current content covers: [brief description of what you've published]

Help me:
1. Identify the 5 most important subtopics I should cover to be seen as an authority
2. For each subtopic, write a one-line description of what the definitive guide would cover
3. Suggest the order I should publish them in (most foundational first)
4. Identify any gaps competitors cover that I'm missing
03

Get your content mentioned on authoritative sources

LLMs learn from the web. They cite sources that are mentioned, linked to, and quoted by other trusted sources. A great article that nobody links to won't get cited.

  • Pitch your original data, research, or unique frameworks to industry publications
  • Guest post on established sites in your space
  • Create citable assets: original stats, named frameworks, visual explainers
  • Build relationships with journalists and creators who cover your space

Prompt for Claude →

I want to create content that's likely to be cited by other publications and AI systems.

My expertise/business: [describe in 2-3 sentences]
My audience's biggest questions right now: [list 3-5]

Help me create:
1. An original "named framework" — a simple model or process that solves a problem my audience has. Give it a memorable name.
2. A set of 5 original statistics or data points I could research or survey to generate (not find elsewhere)
3. Three "contrarian takes" on my topic that are defensible and would provoke discussion

These should be things people would want to quote and link to.

Test your GEO presence right now.

Before you optimize, know where you stand. These three prompts take five minutes.

Ask ChatGPT about your brand

If ChatGPT knows you, you have some GEO presence. If it doesn't, you're invisible to AI search for brand queries.

Ask this →

What do you know about [your brand/business name]? What is it known for? What would you recommend it for?

Ask Perplexity for recommendations in your category

If your name appears, you're being cited. If it doesn't, this is your benchmark — your goal is to appear here within 90 days.

Ask this →

What are the best resources for [your topic/category]? Who are the top voices or platforms I should follow?

Ask Claude to explain your core topic

See if your content, brand, or framework gets referenced. This tells you exactly what gap you need to fill.

Ask this →

Can you explain [your core topic] for a complete beginner? What sources or resources would you recommend?
